WHAT IS LASER THERAPY?
Laser therapy or “photobiomodulation” , is the use of specific wavelengths of light (red and near infrared) to create therapeutic effects. These effects include improved healing time, pain reduction, increased circulation and decreased swelling. Laser Therapy has been widely utilized in Europe by physical therapists, nurses and doctors as far back as the 1970’s. Now, after FDA clearance in 2002, laser therapy is being used extensively in the United States.
WHAT ARE THE EFFECTS OF LASER THERAPY?
During each treatment, laser energy increases circulation, drawing water, oxygen and nutrients to the damaged area. Some of the known biological effects of laser therapy are: Accelerated tissue repair, faster wound healing, reduced scar tissue formation, improved vascular activity, increased metabolic activity, improved nerve function, immunoregulation, anti-inflammatory and analgesic effects.
WHAT TYPE OF LASER IS USED?
Dr. Wendell uses a class IV, infrared, dual frequency (continuous and modulated beam), dual wavelength (790nm and 970nm), K-Laser with variable power from .25 to 6.0 watts. This allows the laser to be calibrated for lower and higher power ranges.
WHAT DOES IT FEEL LIKE TO HAVE A TREATMENT?
Most patients describe it as a very soothing, warm sensation. Treatments are comfortable, and typically last under 15 minutes. Most patients report a significant reduction in pain on the first visit.
CAN THE LASER BE HARMFUL?
The laser Dr. Wendell uses is used for tissue stimulation and tissue repair, and is not strong enough to cut, burn or damage cells. During more than 20 years of use by healthcare providers all over the world, very few side effects have been reported. Occasionally some old injuries or pain syndromes may feel aggravated for a few days, as the healing response is more active after treatment. Eye safety during treatment is important, as direct laser contact with the retina should be avoided. Dr. Wendell is cautious, practices safe habits and always uses eye protection for himself and his patients.
ARE THERE CONTRA-INDICATIONS TO LASER THERAPY?

CAN LASER THERAPY BE USED IN CONJUNCTION WITH OTHER FORMS OF TREATMENT?
